The Quest For The Mythical Blacktail Buck

    So the quest begins…

I thought this would be a little more fun than the usual 10 minutes of footage in which I don’t get anything.  Hope you enjoy.

Glad you’re getting to the bottom of this. Over 40 years ago I was hunting these critters in western Oregon when a beautiful 4 pt buck come racing up behind me and stopped within 10 feet of me and looked down in the same canyon as I was looking. I zeroed him with the 35 Remington and fired. When I walked over there, there was no blood, no hair and no deer. I hesitated telling my hunting partners (my brothers) for fear they question my sanity and laugh me to scorn. I’ve now had over 40 years to think about it and believe it was all a figment of my imagination. At least I hope it was as that was a magnificient buck and I’d hate to have that on my conscience that I missed such a beautiful animal at 10 feet. They have got to be a myth! Please don’t prove me wrong.

Gary, your tale is a sad one, but oft-repeated. The ghost appears, only as a waking dream to haunt the visions of hunters.

Oh, and at the rate I’m going, I’m not likely to bust this myth any time soon.

    3. Dave Says:

I have to say that I have more than a normal share of the ghost showing up right in front of me and my dropping it in its tracks. Just need to get back to getting out there and hunting.

    4. Phillip Loughlin Says:

Dave, I keep hearing these stories. But then, I keep hearing stories about Bigfoot too… I believe it’s time to bring one of these critters in, or admit that they don’t really exist at all.

Are you gonna head back to Hedgepeth during the rifle season??? Are you gonna be back in time from NC for the Bzone opener??? I cant wait until Friday to see witch of my choices I got.
      First was Tyson/O’Ferrall
      Second BarZ
Im gonna try and go for a Bear or Buck.
You know of any other members that put in for the Bzone opener??? It would be cool to know/contact another GRAM hunter before going up.
Pigs in Nov-Feb at Hedgepeth let me know!!!!!!!!!

Dave W, I’m gonna try to get up there for rifle season a time or two, but the weekends get filled up so bloody fast these days. I’ve sworn I’m going to try to hunt more this year, since I won’t be going out of state (except NC), but it just seems like other things keep coming up. It’s frustrating as hell.

I failed to get my opening day lottery in for GRam. Had it all filled out, but never dropped it in the mail. I’m kicking myself for that, because I’ve really enjoyed that Bar Z ranch for the opener. I may hit public land and pack in a little ways, but that’s still up in the air.

I’m definitely gonna go back and hit the hogs in November, by the way. We’ll catch up.

Oh, were you able to recover that pig the other day?

    7. Dave W. Says:

That sort of sucks that since I put in for the lottery Im not able to go to Hedgepeth during rifle season cause it is in the Azone. So gonna go hit up public on the 14th-15ht up near Cache Creek – Knoxville area.

Very entertaining, Phillip. It may be a mythical creature, but with a little magic you’ll succeed. Love the last bit. I was trying not to LOL while viewing this at work. Whoops! I wish you the best of luck during rifle! Cheers.

    9. Phillip Loughlin Says:

Good luck on that public land, Dave. Can be a good hunt, but it sure can get crazy up there.

Albert, thanks. I’ll be casting all the mountain voodoo I can conjure this year. We’ll see if I can put one in the freezer.

Every time I see the footage from deer hunting this time of the year, I’m already wishing our seasons started so much later…but, at least you’re there working on twangin’ a bow string, Phillip!
