The Road To Hell…
… is paved… etc.
(Actually, I think I drove the road to Hell one rainy night at Tejon, and it wasn’t paved at all… but maybe that’s a different story.)
I can’t believe it’s Monday already. The weekend just started… or so it seems. And it could have been such a good one, even if I did have to contain it between end-caps. I had to have Kat to the airport early on Saturday, and had to be there to pick up my daughter on Sunday night. But there’s so much room in-between.
My first intent was to take off as soon as I dropped Kat at the airport and head out to Hedgepeth Ranch for another go at the deer and pigs with my bow. I figured I could hunt Saturday evening and Sunday morning, and be back home in plenty of time. And it would’ve worked too… except I got busy on Friday and failed to call Golden Ram to book my reservation. There’s never been a problem getting onto the ranch, but the rules say I have to book my hunt before going out there.
“No problem,” thinks I. “There’s stuff I can get done around the homefront instead.”
By the time I got back from dropping Kat at the Oakland airport, I had a handful of things in mind. I’d go ride my horse for a few hours while it was still cool. When we got back, I’d give her a good wash, and get some conditioner to get those tangles out of her tail before it turned into dreadlocks again (last year she was Rasta-horse). I also needed to organize the trailer, and make sure it’s in shape for some day trips (that I’m always planning but never taking).
And then there’s the garage.
I’ve been meaning to get in there and figure out a good way to organize and store my hunting gear. There are a bunch of cabinets in there, but there’s no place to hang up clothes. My plan was to set up a rod in the tall cabinet where I could hang my coats and rain gear, and then I could stow the extra ammo, decoys, archery tackle, etc. on the lower shelves. That would clear up a ton of floor space in the garage.
But I was pretty tired. I hadn’t slept well Thursday or Friday night, and work’s been a little stressful. I got back to the house, sat down in my new recliner, and put on the horn porn. Every time I’d nod off, the phone would ring. Finally, I zonked out. It was noon and hot when I woke up. I went out and started to piddle around in the garage, but the inspiration ran short. I had a beer and some lunch, and before I knew it, I was back in that recliner.
Sunday morning came, and I forced myself to walk away from the TV and go up to the ranch. I saddled up my mare, Dolly, and we took off on a nice, three-hour ride. When I got back, we were both soaked in sweat as the heat of the day was just getting started. I hosed her off, brushed out her mane and tail, and got the conditioner done. There, that’s that! Then I opened up the trailer.
“What’s the buzzing?” I wondered… but only for a moment before I saw the three or four wasp nests along the roof of the trailer.
I closed it up, put Dolly back out in pasture, and decided I’d head down and pick up some wasp spray, along with another bottle of conditioner. But first I needed some lunch, and my favorite Mexican place has a buffett on Sundays. Buffett and beer…
Somehow, after lunch, I drove right past the store and ended up back on the recliner. The phone woke me at around 16:30. Where’d the day go?
Which brings us back to Monday.

Another weekend wasted away!

There are those days that the ol recliner is in need of a little bonding. My father in law is so organized its disgusting. He organized my garage when we moved here 14 years ago and it hasn’t been organized since. I won’t let him in there to see the mess and I can’t get up the energy to tackle it myself cause as far as I know there is nothing huntible in there.

Gary, I believe you stumbled right onto it there!
Amazing the lengths we can go through to hunt, but yet, it’s so tough to find the motivation to do something that’s not hunting.

Ya know, sometimes just sleeping a lot (and drinking beer) is the smartest thing you can do. Count your blessings!

Phillip, I know what you mean. I was going to respond to your blog, but decided to go lie on the couch.

There you go! Combine a critter with a mess.
“This here critter will make nests in you mess and then you can hunt him out by clearing a path or two.”

Dave, I think that works. I had a rat at the other house and man I went through everything to root that rascal out. Completely re-organized my gun room and “wine cellar”.

The days do fly by, even when you’re not sure how much fun ended up having.

That would be “how much fun YOU ended up having.”

Well, Phillip, sometimes the best laid plans…..
I think we all have those days, and I wouldn’t trade any of them. It’s life….live it up! Or, you could sleep in the recliner.
We all need both from time to time.
