New Hog Blog Poll
Well, I hadn’t thought about it lately, but the last Hog Blog poll stayed online for a lot longer than I’d intended. The last question, in case you don’t recall, was what kind of rifle action do you use most often? After 799 responses, the outstanding winner was Bolt Action. That’s not such a surprise out here in the west, but I really expected the semi-auto to give the bolt guns a run for their money in other parts of the country.
So based on the polls I’ve run to date, most of you rifle hunters out there tend to hunt with Remington bolt-actions, chambered in 30-06. I think that puts you dead in the middle based on the results of similar polls in the outdoor media. Cool, huh? Or, maybe not…
Anyway, new poll is now online (to the right of the post and down a ways). When do you start hunting? Are year-round, like CA and Texas hog hunters? Are you sitting on go for a September dove opener? Or do you wait eagerly for those crisp, fall days to start your season?

My Hunting “year” starts with the July archery opener here on the coast for deer. Once local deer is done then there are the out of state hunt(s)then upland and ducks into January. If I get a hog hunt it will usually be before turkey opens..
I’d say the only break in the action for me is the period between Spring Turkey, and the Deer season.
(Not that it is a good excuse). There is such a population of Coyotes that I could hunt 365 days a year, or head a few hours away for hogs.
With all that hunting available I still only spent 27 days afield. this year I am shooting for 35 or more…

I hear ya, John! I haven’t been spending nearly the time in the field that I’m used to. Even my guiding took a big hit this year (and I enjoy guiding as much as actually hunting).

Hi Phillip,
Just came over from Tovar’s blog.
RE: The poll – How about we turkey hunters? Should there be a radio button for May?
After May, though I spend all my outdoor time fishing and shooting at the range. Then it’s back into the woods scouting in Sept. and hunting in October to December.

Hey Bill, Thanks for dropping by!
As far as a special consideration for Spring turkey hunters. No way. Turkey hunters are nuts!
I was kinda thinking that most turkey hunters hunt other stuff too, so most of them are starting way before May. But hey, if spring turkey is all you do then you do deserve special mention.

“…Turkey hunters are nuts!…”
OK, I’ll give you that. Before I went out for turkeys, I thought it more appropriate to bag mine at the supermarket.
However last May after some prodding by another “nut”, I went out. I had a few close encounters of the turkey kind, but no success. Now, I’m sort of obsessed.
I’ve been hunting grouse, pheasants and deer for years, but being in the woods in the Spring has a special cache.

Of course, you must realize that I’m a turkey hunter too, although I’m not quite as addicted to it as some of the other “nuts” out there.
It is kinda special to get out there at that time of year, but since I’m a hog hunter with year-round seasons I think it’s special most any time.
