This is often the case on the big blogs like Field and Stream. The comments come in so hot and heavy that any attempt at actually saying something gets buried in the noise. I still comment, often, especially when someone says something really stupid... and sometimes to challenge the supercilious and self-righteous when the get going on topics they obviously know nothing about. That's one of those sites where you can definitely see how ANYONE can be an expert on the Internet. Sometimes, the best course is to step back and let it roll.
