Speaking of “while I was out” – everybody is hog hunting!

Man, I tell ya… I’m walking my feet to the bone at the SHOT Show to bring everyone the latest and greatest in industry news, and how do I get rewarded?  Everybody else goes hog hunting!  And they did pretty well too!

First of all, there’s Jeff down in the South Carolina low country!  He’s out there putting hunters on the hogs and having a heck of a time at the Cypress Creek hunting club.  To really rub it in, he took a bunch of Tarheels out there, while thisTarheel hung out in a smelly old convention center.  From the looks of the Cypress Creek blog, there are plenty of hogs to kill down there, too!

Not content to kill hogs, Jeff is trapping the fool out of them too.  He even wrote a great blog entry, instructing other hunters on how to trap these smart critters for themselves.  Of course, here in CA, I can’t trap hogs without a depredation permit, so all I can do is look at all that pork in Jeff’s pictures and pout.

Then I flip through my blogroll and there’s Rex and his cohorts at the Christmas Ranch.  They’ve been slaying the deer down there, and I was OK with that (even though I didn’t get a deer for myself this season), but then he had to go and rub it in with a couple of successful hog hunts!  Rex has been rubbing it in with his blog.  I’m soon gonna have to head down to MS and see if I can’t put an end to a legend… old Scissors!

I’m scared to keep reading through my blogroll, because I bet they’re not the only ones who have been out killing hogs while I slaved away at the SHOT Show.

thanks for the link, let me know when you are ready to come here and get a wild hog.

Hey, it is not all fun and hog games here in SC… the lows have been in the teens and the highs haven’t gotten much out of the 30s, so hog hunting in these conditions call for only the most hardcore!
Of course that is why trapping them is so fun… you can sleep in and check on them during the “warm” afternoon hours :)
And it is funny that you are longing for some hog hunting, because while reading your daily posts from the SHOT show in my college home of Orlando, I have been thinking how much I would like to be there!
Thanks for the links too, and I have a great spot all set up for you when you come down. As a matter of fact, we are only 5 hours from O-town, so call the airlines and let them know you will be moving your return trip back a day or two! Seriously, call me if you can make it…

Well, I reckon this will brighten your day then. I’ve not done a single day of hog hunting while you’ve been gone. Who cares that Idaho doesn’t have hogs – that’s not the point. The point is that I’m a real loyal guy and would never dream of rubbing in my hog hunting adventures while you are unable to go. (But if Idaho ever gets hogs…well, I reckon we’ll just forget all about this.)

Rex and Jeff, thanks for the offers! If it’s at all possible, I WILL take you up on them. Just gotta get the time and travel funds…

And Tom, I thank you for your loyalty and self-denial. That’s strong, man… strong!

    5. Arthur Says:

There has definitely been a lot of hog killing going on while you were out, Phillip. Don’t fear, though, I haven’t killed anything in quite awhile:)

Hi Guys- I was looking at the internal organs on a hog and looking at its bone structure with that hard fatty grisel plate over the lungs and heart. So I was wondering if you are shooting a heavy caliber rifle why not slip a bullet into the hogs brain for a humane killing shot. I know you guys and gals must be a true marksman in making such a shot.Wouldn’t this save the hams on both sides of the hog for alot more meat saved than wasted from the bullet damage?

Hi Guys- Have you ever wondered if a deer grunt call will work to grunt up a hog or at least get them interested in comming over to investigate on who the other hog was who grunted to them. Going to try it out next week and see who knows. Maybe it’ll work maybe not. Why not try it. All you got to do is short grunts like a hog makes. Has anyone had success in grunting up hogs? Rick

    9. Phillip Loughlin Says:

      Hey Rick,

I’ve actually tried it twice. The first time, in SC, I grunted at a boar from about 75 yards away. He turned and started coming right to my treestand.

The second time, here in CA, the hogs pretty well ignored me.

If that’s the worst that can happen, then why not try it?

    10. Rick Says:

Hi Phillip- I figured why not try it. I’d heard a squeal and also the grunts they make. Did you get that hog in sc that came to you?

    11. Phillip Loughlin Says:

Rick, I’m ashamed to say I didn’t. Sent my arrow into the branches of an oak tree and never saw it again. I expect it landed somewhere on the other side of the Savannah River.

      I’d try it again, though.

As I understand, the best way to use grunts is like an elk cow call… to settle the hogs down when you’re close. A few soft grunts while you stalk (as long as the wind is in your favor) is supposed to keep them from getting too freaked out about your footsteps. Haven’t tried this yet, but it’s what I’ve been told by reliable sources.

    12. Rick Says:

OHH Phillip- its a good thing I wasn’t your hunting partner I’d cut your shirt tail off for a miss lol. Did you have hog fever since it wasn’t a deer so it wasn’t buck fever.lol. I’ll try the grunt it’ll be fun seeing what reaction i get from the hogs. Good luck in getting the next one.

    13. Phillip Loughlin Says:

If I lost a shirt tail for everything I’ve missed with the bow, I wouldn’t have a whole shirt to my name!

Good luck, and let us know how it all pans out!
