CA DFG Q&A (and a reminder)

How’s that for a clutter of relatively meaningless letters?

Anyway, the CA DFG (Department of Fish and Game, for those who don’t know) sends out a press release every Thursday containing some questions from sportsmen, and the answers from the DFG spokesperson, Carrie Wilson. I ran a few of these release when they first started, but the questions have generally been either lightweight, or they just haven’t been real relevant to the Hog Blog or hunting. Today’s edition, though, had one Q&A that I really like, and just wanted to share with you guys:

Question: I have been taking my 15-year-old son duck hunting. He is licensed; I am not. Is it legal for me to use some of his duck calls as a way to be more active in the hunt? (John K.)

Answer: Absolutely! It is perfectly legal for you to accompany your son on his hunts and to participate as the caller, retriever, spotter, decoy carrier or in whatever capacity you would like. As long as you are not carrying a gun or ammunition and have no means to take (harvest) the game, you are in good shape.

By the way, I applaud you for supporting and encouraging your son in his duck hunting endeavors! Even though you won’t be actually “hunting” while with him, I’ll bet that by your interest and efforts to share in his hunt, you will enrich your son’s hunting experiences all the more.

Absolutely, and cheers to the father who takes his kid out there, even if he’s not hunting for himself!  That’s awesome!

Just one more reminder folks, as the holiday season rolls over us and we celebrate with family and friends… take your kid hunting.  That time you spend will form a tighter bond with your young’uns than almost anything else I can think of.  Days afield make for indelible memories, and the discipline a kid takes away from hunting and shooting sports will transfer over to everything else they do in life.

I love that they have a Q & A newsletter of sorts. That is a great idea, and one that I wish Michigan would take on.

I’m also very impressed by the response. Not only did they answer the question, they even went above and beyond and saluted him for hunting with his son.

I think all of the fish and game/DNR departments in our nation could take a lesson or two from this.

And taking your kids hunting and fishing is a great idea. I can’t wait for my little one to get old enough.

This is a great response to a Dad who seems to be hunting just because his son wants to - and you are right taking kids hunting is one of the best ways to build memories. Our Christmas Eve mallards sitting on the mantle of our fireplace always remind me of the young man who was hunting with my husband that day and who passed away in a hunting accident just a couple of years later. He was like a nephew to us and we’re still close to his family because we spent time in the field with him.
