A-zone Blacktail and Hog Hunt- Recap

Well, first of all… I didn’t get sprayed by a skunk. I’m a little gun shy of those things. In the last video, when he raises his tail I think there was a coyote down in the draw with him. He had no idea I was there.

For those who haven’t been keeping up, I was bowhunting blacktails during the California A-zone archery season. This was my first outing with the new Mathews Drenalin compound, after many years shooting a recurve. The hunt took place on the Hedgepeth Ranch, which is leased by the Golden Ram Sportsmen’s Club. It’s a great place, and I had success there with a hog and a deer last year.

Anyway, once again as in so many of my hunting videos, there won’t be any kill shots or spectacular close-ups with trophy game (except that skunk). But I hope you enjoy it anyway…

Still looks like a good time, despite the lack of kill shots. I have plenty of video and great memories that don’t involve a kill shot.

Well, at least you saw some great country! What was that little pocket in the rocks and wood? I couldn’t quite tell – some sort of den? Thanks for sharing your hunt with us!

Yeah, Arthur… like I’ve said so many times, it’s getting out there that’s important. I’ve killed a lot of animals in my life, and I’ll probably kill a bunch more. Each one is rewarding in its own way, but the hunting trip itself is an even bigger prize.

Tom, it was a first for me. I’ve seen hog beds that looked like little nests or dens, and I’ve seen hog wallows. This was like a combination of both. It was sheltered on three side by rocks and logs, with a nice mudhole in the middle of it. You could see where the hogs had been rubbing against the rocks and logs. There were two really good trails leading up the hill toward the bedding and feeding areas also. Unfortunately, none of that shows up too well when compressed to YouTube size.

Until I can afford better equipment and editing software, the best I can hope is that you viewers get the general idea anyway.

      Hey Dan…

Nothing to be sorry about! The hunt was great.

Thanks though.. the music was a minor departure from previous vids.
