Well here we go! CA deer season opens Saturday!

A nice A-zone blacktailCalifornia deer hunters rejoice!  Deer season is upon us!

Well, it’s upon the hearty (or crazy) few of us anyway who can stand the 100-degree heat and stalk the wily blacktail deer quietly on the dry, crunchy ground.

California’s A-zone archery deer season opens across the central part of the state tomorrow morning, one-half hour before sunrise, and I know a lot of hunters have been sitting on go, waiting for this one to kick off.  By this time tomorrow someone will be taking pictures of the first deer killed in the 2008 season.

I’ll be out there next weekend, pending the arrival of my tag.  It’s an over-the-counter tag, but I made a slight error and failed to get my application in early… so I’ll be biting my nails all next week in hopes that it arrives on time.  I’m really looking forward to getting out there with this new bow, and seeing if I can turn my bowhunting slump around.

To those of you heading out this weekend, be safe and have fun!  Remember to stay hydrated, watch out for sparks and fire, and shoot straight!

I still can’t believe you are starting deer season already. I’m seriously jealous. Not just a little jealous…VERY jealous. I’m suffering hunting withdrawals. I think a loooonnnngg fishing trip is in order.

      Hey Tom,

It’s kinda cool that we get such an early start. Last year I was done with both of my deer tags before the firearm season even started back home (North Carolina).

On the other hand, I miss the frosty mornings and the smell of the autumn woods. Not that we get much of either here in the San Francisco Bay Area, but those sensations will always mean “hunting season” to me.

Good luck with those tags Phillip, If they do not arrive in time you are always welcome to come out and try to turn that slump around upon different game.

I have to go to (insert appropriate expletive here) San diego for four (and here) days for (and here) work. And next weekend? I’ll be in (one more here) LA, again for work.

This is the first time in a long time that I’ve missed opening day.

    5. Phillip Loughlin Says:

Thanks, Michael… watch out, I may take you up on that. I’ve got plenty of pig tags.

Josh, sorry you’ll miss the opener. Sure does suck how work always finds a way to interfere with real life, huh?

It is hard to believe that you all have such an early season! I had no idea that anyone could start hunting in the middle of July.

      Deer season opening in July???
Holy cow – I never knew!!!
Is that just for CA residents, or can out-of-state-hunters partake, as well?

    9. Jesse Says:

Good luck Phil. What out for them buzzworms.

Wow…deer season starting already. I couldn’t imagine hunting deer in the summer-it would just feel weird.

Good luck though when you head out. Hopefully you can stick one with that bow. I can’t wait to see the success pictures.

I am so happy for my new boyfriend that he is excited and ready for deer season! He is more than ready for tomorrow, he is up there now and counting down now… perhaps with a diet coke and jackdaniels? I don’t know for sure, but most likely
It is the love of his life…. yes….. and I am one of those rare women who understand that!
lol! Whatever makes him happy makes me happy!

Looking forward to seeing the pictures and hearing the stories!
