Twas the night before Father’s Day
Twas the night before father’s day
or really the morning
when I sat at the computer
Composing and yawning
I need some coffee
was the first thing I thought
A nice steaming cup
All black, strong and hot
But what about gifts
for the upcoming day
Presents for a dad
For work or for play?
Something to show him
how much we care
how much we appreciate
the fact that he’s there
“Boy this is stupid.”
I thought to myself
But now that I’ve started
It’s off of the shelf
So on with my doggerel
my ridiculous rhyme
my brief flight of fancy
my complete waste of time

The night before father’s day
and what can we do
to gift our dear fathers
I haven’t a clue
Does he need a new tie
or a barbecue set?
Or something sporty
lawn darts or croquet?
A new hunting rifle
or maybe a bow?
A new ATV
with get up and go?
A new box of bullets
make that lead-free
A new suit of camo
that looks like a tree?
The ideas come easy
the shopping came late
as the calendar nears
this critical date
Or here’s an idea
it’s only a thought
Do we have to show love
with something we bought?
I dunno about you guys
but for myself as a dad
There’s no greater gift
than what I already have
I’ve had lots of presents
from rifles to mugs
but there’s nothing so precious
as one simple hug.
From my darling daughter
she’s her daddy’s girl
the gift of a lifetime
The joy of my world.

What a great poem. If only I was that creative.

Very nice poem. I like it when you work in verse instead of prose. Although your prose is very well done too.
