Porcine Press – News of the World

Here’s another edition of the Porcine Press… expanding your horizons with news from the wide, wide world of hogs!

The Statesman, an Indian newspaper online reports that wild boar are raiding villages and actually attacking the residents.  As many as 20 people have been injured in the raids, which are being carried out by wild boar that are “almost the size of elephant calves!”  A professional hunter is being sought to put an end to this depredation.

He may need to get a bigger gun.

Not to be outdone, Typically Spanish.com reports on a wild boar hopping in the pool for a dip, and of course, terrorizing the tourists.  After initially trying to get the pig out of the water, the Guardia Civil finally shot and killed the animal.  I wonder if they cooked it up at the resort’s barbecue area?  Never saw anything like this on Baywatch.

Apparently, hunters releasing feral hogs in order to provide hunting opportunities isn’t just a problem in the U.S.  ABC Online, an Australian news source discusses the problem there.   The interesting (and positive) twist is that this activity is being denounced by hunting organizations.

Stay tuned, as the Porcine Press keeps you up to date with the wild world of wild pigs.

Can wild boar really get to the “size of elephant calves”? That seems rather large.

    2. Phillip Loughlin Says:

I don’t know about elephant calves, but I’ve seen photos of some real monsters out of Iran and the Caucasus Mtns. They definitely get huge.

    3. Jon Says:

Don’t India, Spain and Australia have real tight gun ownership laws? They’re probably getting “overpopulated” by more game than just Hogs!

    4. Phillip Loughlin Says:

Actually, the hunting culture in Spain and Australia is alive and well..although, especially in Australia, firearm restrictions have added some challenges.

In India, as I understand from some of my Indian friends, hunting has been for years a rich man’s sport… the realm of the wealthy and privileged. Game populations in much of the country were decimated both by poaching and by uncontrolled hunting during the Colonial years. However, conservation efforts in the past decade or two have resulted in the return of many native species… although there are still far more Axis deer in Texas than there are in all of their native country (India).
