    In the interest of disclosure…

OK, so now that I’ve got a little of the self-indulgent silliness out of the way, what’s this blog gonna be about?  Why am I here, and why would you care?  And what do I have to say (write) that’s worth hearing (reading)?

I can answer most of that with a few short words.

I’m here because I love hog hunting.  I love doing it, I love talking about it, and I love writing and reading about it.

It’s fair enough to say that I love most hunting, particularly big game.  Most specifically, though, I love chasing the hogs.  It doesn’t tear me away from my deer hunting, and when I can fund it, I love to go elk hunting too.  But those deer and elk trips seldom last more than a week or two, and they begin to seem like vacation.  Hog hunting, on the other hand, is a kind of madness.

Here, in CA where I do most of my hunting, hog seasons are all year long.  It never closes, and there’s no limit on how many I can take.  That’s pretty cool, in my book, and it’s part of the reason that I’ve come to enjoy this particular sport.  I can do it any time I want to, regardless of whether it’s fall, summer, winter, or spring.

So this blog is going to focus on hog hunting.  But it’s going to be focused with my perspective, since that’s the perspective I see most clearly.  I may wander into other territory from time to time.  I like to talk about other kinds of hunting too.  I enjoy gun chat as well, although I’m not as technical as some folks.  Sometimes certain current events in the hunting world are worth notice and discussion.

I guess that’s something I almost forgot to mention.  Discussion.  It’s one of the coolest parts of the blogosphere, in my opinion.  While it may often seem like it, this isn’t a one-sided conversation here.  You, dear reader, are in the unique position of actually discussing these topics as they come along.  You don’t have to discuss only with me either, as anyone is free to jump in.  If all goes well, you soon have community.  It’s pretty amazing, when you think about it.

So there you have a couple of my reasons for being here.  So let’s see why YOU might come here to read my ranting and raving.

I’m not an expert at hog hunting.  I never did and never will make any such claim.  I know a little bit, thanks mostly to some of the people who’ve helped me along the way…either directly or through their writing.  The rest of what I know I’ve learned the hard way, in the field.  This sport isn’t especially well-covered in the Hook-n-bullet media, and the scientific community is only now showing any real interest in wild hogs.  There’s still a ton to learn.

So I hope you’ll find value in joining me on my learning quest.  Maybe I can tell you something you didn’t already know… and I know danged well that there’s plenty of room in my head for enlightenment.  I’d like to think I can set the stage here for an on-going and long lasting discussion about hog hunting and all the things that go along with it.
